Hal Flavin

19 May 2011 - Liverpool Sound City
29 May 2011 - Eurocultured Festival, Manchester
31 May 2011 - AAA, London 8pm, FREE ENTRY

Hal Flavin (www.myspace.com/halflavin)

Hal Flavin was formed in Luxembourg and their music features electropop song structures and beats, modified samples, distillations of rock drive and a chunk of edgy synth-pop. Compared by some listeners to Hurts, The Talking Heads or Röyksopp respectively, their sound has a hybrid ambiguity that sets it apart. They supported the likes of Metronomy, IAMX, The Faint, Fujiya & Miyagi, Does It Offend You, Yeah! or Birdy Nam Nam and played at festivals like Eurosonic Noorderslag, Rock a Field and Italia Wave Love. A series of gigs in the UK, France, Italy, Benelux and the Czech Republic has earned them the reputation of a thrilling live band with a sincerely electric energy.

01 June 2011 HAL FLAVIN & INBORN - The Queen of Hoxton, London (free entry!)

INBORN! (www.myspace.com/inborntrance) is an ambitious art-rock collective originated from Luxor that has all it takes to make their mark on the twenty-first century map of modern rock music. After their creation in early 2010 they were contacted by Ross Robinson and recorded their first longplayer at his house in Venice Beach last autumn. Melting electronic body music with the dynamics of recent indie-rock outfits, the band will soon invade the stages all across the universe.

01 June 2011 - PASCAL SCHUMACHER QUARTET - South Hill Park, Bracknell

Pascal Schumacher Quartet (www.pascalschumacher.com)

After his successfull performance at the Pizza Express during the London Jazz Festival 2010 don't miss the band @ the Vortex Pascal Schumacher (vibraphone) has been described as a 'Goldsmith' in his art, a boundary-pushing musician, a resourceful improviser and an imaginative composer. Keen to explore the links that exist between many musical genres, it is difficult to pigeonhole his talent, his taste or his musical influences. Every musician must one day free himself from role models and traditions if he wishes to depart from well-trodden paths. Pascal Schumacher does this in an emphatic, sensual way. The Quartet will be playing music from 'Bang My Can', music based on an approach characterized just as much by the chamber jazz of the eighties as by the rock sound of the nineties and the openness of the present.

31 May 2011 - Vortex, London 8.30pm | £12| Book online

PASCAL SCHUMACHER QUARTET & MAXIME BENDER QUARTET

Maxime Bender Quartet (www.maximebender.com)

Impressively combining the old with the new, this young saxophonist is equally influenced by the bouncy, compositional piano/sax interplay found on 70’s albums like Keith Jarrett’s ‘Belonging’, and more modern, angular, avant-garde tonalities. The blend is never jarring, though. Maxime Bender has created a beautiful, buoyant body of work where melodies can move in surprising directions, yet still sound familiar.

Describing her music as folk-rock, though not inaccurate, hardly does justice to the broad sweep of her brush : Claudine Muno's songs cover every ground from "chanson" to jazz.

Leana Sealy (vocals), David Laborier (guitar), Rom Heck (bass), Michel Mootz (drums)

“a singer who combines confident jazz phrasing with a sultry soulfulness” Jazzmann

Born in Dublin and now resident in Luxembourg, with a voice reminiscent of a young Ella Fitzgerald, Leana Sealy recently won the public’s ear and the award of Prix du Public at the Festival des Saveurs Culturelles du Monde.

Accessible and soulful, her honeyed tone and style is influenced by her training as a classical saxophonist, whilst also bringing a jazz sensibility to her phrasing and improvisation. She leads her quartet of masterful contemporaries, with songs from her most recent album „Undecided“.

an inspired musician, whose new release will seduce everyone with the grace of its interpretations, and the 'modern touch' which breathes new life into jazz classics." (Gaston Carré, Letzebuerger Wort)
